Officials with Franklin Special School District say a woman lied about where she lived so her son could attend Johnson Elementary School.
The district has filed a lawsuit against Angela Salazar, asking her to pay more than $14,500 for tuition reimbursement and other fees. It was filed in Williamson County Chancery Court.
According to the suit, Salazar signed a notarized affidavit on May 5, 2008, saying she lived in Franklin. But an investigator hired by the school district determined she was actually living in Maury County.
Salazar could not be reached for comment. John Milazo, the attorney who notarized her affidavit, said he is not handling the case.
In the affidavit, Salazar stated that she'd lived in Franklin since 1997 but obtained a house in Maury County and would be moving after her lease expired. Milazo told the district that Salazar was remodeling the Maury home but not living there. The district investigator saw toys and a playground set at that home and never saw Salazar going to or leaving a residence in Franklin, according to the complaint.
The district's annual tuition for students who live elsewhere is $3,000. District attorney Charles Cagle said state law allows school systems to charge more than that.
